How to use paper napkins

Paper napkins are no longer the Cinderella of the table. With the right prints, they can be as stylish as cloth napkins... and yes, they also have their own etiquette.

Where do you place a paper napkin on the table?

Even if it's paper, the napkin deserves its place.

  • If folded: on the plate or to its left.

  • If you use a napkin ring: place it to one side, near the fork.

When to use a paper napkin (and when not to)

Perfect for:

  • Casual meals (picnics, birthdays, dinners with friends)

  • Afternoon snacks, brunch, or cocktails

  • Outdoor events where practicality is key

Avoid them if:

  • There are dishes with sauces (they'll disintegrate in your hand)

  • The occasion is formal or black-tie

  • The tablecloth is linen and you want to maintain aesthetic consistency.

Whether for informal meals or outdoors, I like to arrange them gracefully: folded on the plate or held with a sprig from the garden. I take them seriously, even if they are paper. I choose them one by one. They are so beautiful that some customers save them "just in case". But I always say: details are meant to be enjoyed, not hidden.

Types of paper napkins: which to choose?

Each format has its ideal moment. Here's a small guide to always get it right:

  • Cocktail napkin: 12.5 x 12.5 cm closed (25 x 25 cm open). Perfect for appetizers, drinks, or light snacks.

Etiquette when using them: beyond just wiping your lips

  • Don't put it around your neck like a bib (even if you're eating spaghetti)

  • Don't crumple it or roll it into a ball when you're done

  • If it's decorated, use it elegantly, showing off the design

  • Do not reuse it if you have already wiped your mouth with it (especially at shared tables)

What do I do with it when I'm finished?

  • If there's a plate: place it on top, gently folded

  • If there's no plate: leave it to the left of your setting, without making an abstract sculpture

Frequently asked questions about paper napkin etiquette

Can I use paper napkins at a formal dinner?
It's not ideal. For formal dinners, it's better to opt for cloth napkins.

Where do you put a paper napkin if there's no plate?
To the left of the cutlery, always neatly arranged.

Is it acceptable to keep a paper napkin on your lap?
Yes, though it's uncommon. If it's durable and attractive, you can.

How many paper napkins should I provide per person?
One is usually enough, except for cocktails or buffets. In those cases, you can provide a small stack.

There's no need to consult an etiquette manual. Using a paper napkin well simply means having a good eye... and not crumpling it up at the end. Because even the simplest details can show thoughtfulness.
