What is the best fabric for tablecloths and how can you tell?
Choosing the perfect tablecloth is almost like finding the ideal wedding dress: it has to be beautiful, practical, and, above all, able to withstand the daily wear and tear of life (and stains, of course!). Over the years, I've tried everything at home: cotton, linen, polyester, fabric blends... even some failed experiments with plasticized materials! So today I want to share some tips with you so you know which fabric is best for your tablecloth and, more importantly, how to distinguish it.
Linen: elegance and durability all in one
If you ask me what my favorite is, I would definitely say linen. It's a classic that never fails! Linen has a spectacular drape and a slightly wrinkled texture that gives it that casual yet chic touch that I adore. Plus, it's super resistant, meaning it will withstand all family dinners and meals without losing an ounce of its charm. I use a natural linen one from La Compañía Francesa on my living room table, and every time I set it, my guests are delighted (and so am I, because it's very easy to care for!).
How to recognize good linen?
The trick is in the texture: it should be soft but firm to the touch, and when you wrinkle it a little, you'll notice that the fabric almost immediately returns to its original shape. That's the good stuff!

Cotton: the ally of family meals
Cotton is another wonderful option, especially for everyday use. It's more economical than linen, but no less practical. However, cotton tends to wrinkle more, so if you're someone who hates ironing (like me!), make sure to choose a thick one. 100% cotton tablecloths are ideal for a busy table: they can take whatever you throw at them and, best of all, they're easy to wash.

How to identify good cotton?
The trick here is to observe the thickness and feel. Good cotton should not be too thin, as this indicates it can wear out quickly or be transparent. Also, if it feels cool and soft to the touch, it's good cotton.
Polyester and cotton blend: practical and functional
If you're looking for a tablecloth that can withstand everything (and when I say everything, I mean sauces, wine stains, and restless children), a polyester and cotton blend is a winning option. It's less elegant than linen, but much more practical if you want a tablecloth that practically cleans itself. I use these for meals with my dogs around (yes, they also join the parties) because I know I can put them in the washing machine without fear.
How to differentiate a good polyester blend?
Look at the sheen: if it's too shiny, it might look like plastic, which detracts from its elegance. A good blend has a more matte appearance, similar to pure cotton, but with the advantage of being much more wrinkle-resistant.
The surprise: the resin-coated tablecloth
This type of tablecloth has been a revelation for me. It's perfect for outdoors or for those meals where you know something is going to end up on the tablecloth (have you ever had kids and sauces at the same table?). At La Compañía Francesa, you can find resin-coated tablecloths with beautiful patterns, but the best part is that all you need is a damp cloth to make them look like new. They don't stain, they don't absorb liquids... and they are so practical that it's almost like magic on the table!
How to tell if it's good quality resin-coated?
Touch the surface: it should be soft, but with some resistance. Low-quality ones often feel stiff or sticky, but good ones strike a balance between flexibility and protection.

Which one to choose then?
If you want elegance and something that will last for years, definitely choose good quality linen or cotton. If you're looking for something more practical for everyday use, opt for the polyester and cotton blend or a resin-coated tablecloth for those special outdoor occasions. In the end, the key is to have one of each, because as I always say: "the table also needs a change of look from time to time."
