How to eliminate bad odors in your home (without going crazy in the attempt)

If there's one thing that can ruin the tranquility of your home, it's a bad smell. Whether it's the stench left by kids' shoes after soccer, the food smell that seems to permanently settle in the kitchen, or that "mysterious aroma" that appears from time to time (and you never know where it comes from), keeping your house smelling fresh isn't always an easy task. But don't worry! Today, I'm going to tell you some tricks that I've tried myself to get rid of bad odors and leave the house smelling heavenly.

 Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate…

First things first: open the windows. It seems obvious, but many times we overlook the basics. There's nothing better than a good cross-breeze to make anything that smells bad, fly away! If it's winter and cold, opening them for 10 minutes a day will be enough. In my house, it's the first thing I do in the morning, and I assure you it works. Of course, close the doors of the rooms you don't want to get cold, lest we end up with a cold from too much ventilation.

 Plants, your best allies

They don't just decorate; they also purify the air. There are plants like aloe vera or the spider plant (I call it "survivor plant" because it endures everything) that are perfect for absorbing bad odors and leaving the air cleaner. I have one in the kitchen and another in the living room, and besides brightening up corners, they help me keep the house with a fresher, more natural aroma.

 Lampe Berger: my best-kept secret

But if you really want to eliminate bad odors at their root and not just mask them, here's my secret weapon: the Lampe Berger. I discovered it a few years ago and since then I haven't used anything else. Why? Because it's not just an air freshener; it's a lamp that purifies the air and perfumes it at the same time. And I'm not exaggerating if I tell you that in a matter of minutes you can eliminate any smell! At La Compañía Francesa we have different models of Lampe Berger, and besides being effective, they are so beautiful that they decorate any corner of the house.

Lampe Berger White Tea Purity Perfume 1 L

How does it work?

It's very simple: you light the lamp with the special liquid, let the flame act for a couple of minutes, extinguish it, and voilà, the air is clean and wonderfully scented. I love the "White Tea Purity" perfume because it has a fresh touch of bergamot and blackcurrant that reminds me of the countryside in spring.

The citrus trick in the kitchen

If there's anything I hate more than dirt, it's food smells that cling to the kitchen for days. The best trick I've tried is boiling lemon or orange peels in a pot with water. The steam they release not only neutralizes odors but also leaves an incredible citrus aroma. Plus, it's super easy to do, and I always have an orange or lemon on hand. You'll be surprised by the change!

 Don't forget the textiles

Sometimes, bad odors hide in textiles: cushions, curtains, rugs… My trick is to give them a good once-over from time to time. If you can't wash everything, a quick spray with an odor neutralizer can work wonders. However, in my living room, every week I spray the cushions and the sofa with a touch of my Lampe Berger perfume, and the difference is noticeable instantly.

A final touch with scented candles

Once you've eliminated bad odors, it's time to enjoy! I love lighting a scented candle at the end of the day to create a cozy atmosphere. If you want a recommendation, I suggest you try Baobab Collection candles, which we also have at La Compañía Francesa. Not only do they smell incredible, but when you light them, they create a warm and relaxing atmosphere. My favorite is cedar and lime, an aroma that combines freshness and warmth, perfect for any moment. Here are two more options that fascinate me.

Medium Marble Candle                            Small Siloli Candle

In conclusion…

Eliminating bad odors is easier than it seems when you have the right tools. So now you know, start by ventilating, add a natural touch with plants, and if you want a home impeccable in aroma and style, don't forget the Lampe Berger. Believe me, once you try it, you won't want to go back to traditional aerosols or air fresheners.
